Commonly Treated Conditions

What conditions are commonly treated by acupuncture medicine? When I speak to people about acupuncture, they are usually curious about what types of conditions people come in to have treated. This is different from asking, "what can acupuncture treat?" The second question is easier to answer because my education, training and reference books give me the understanding of the truly wide range of conditions that acupuncture medicine can treat successfully (see below). On the other hand, the first question translates to, “of the people who seek acupuncture medicine, which conditions are they seeking to have treated?"

In early 2002 I devised, developed and lead a research study at the New England School of Acupuncture’s main clinic in Watertown, MA. The study focused on discovering what people sought treatment for at the clinic. The study encompassed 12 years of clinic operation from 1990 through early 2002. The following results were found:

The total number of individual clients during the 12-year length of the study was 4196.

39.4% came in for muscular/skeletal conditions.

5.0-7.0% came in for either urogenital/ob/gyn, ear/nose/throat or psychological/emotional conditions.

4.0-5.0% came in for either fatigue, gastrointestinal, neurological, stress-related or headache/migraine-related conditions.

0.0-3.3% - came in for various other conditions.

(For more detailed results of the study please contact me.)

These results show that muscular/skeletal conditions are, by far, the most common reasons people seek acupuncture. This is also true throughout acupuncture practices, as a whole, in the U.S. Muscular/skeletal conditions comprise a large number of conditions, which include, but are not limited to, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and carpel tunnel syndrome. Urogenital/ob/gyn conditions consist of irregular menstruation, menopausal symptoms, bladder incontinence, impotence and cystitis. Psychological/emotional conditions include anxiety, depression, and bi-polar disease.

In my years of private practice both in Nashua and Amherst, the patient profile I’ve seen fits fairly closely with these results. As in the study, the largest percentage of my practice is devoted to treating muscular/skeletal conditions, but on the contrary, I treat a greater percentage of patients for headaches/migraines than are shown in these results. This is also true for anxiety, depression and stress-related conditions. In addition, I have also successfully treated sinus problems, symptoms from multiple sclerosis (MS), ADD/ADHD, sleeping problems and gastro-intestinal conditions, as well as a number of other conditions. This is not an exhaustive list of what I have successfully treated. If you have questions about your specific condition, give me a call or email and we can talk about it.
